Getting Settled

Your first few weeks on campus will be intense. There's a lot of information you'll need to absorb, not to mention all the new people you'll meet. And that's all before you sit down for your first class. This page is set up to give you some tips on what to focus your attention as you get settled in.

What to Bring
If you haven't yet checked out the page on what (and what not) to bring, you should do so now.

What to Bring

When to Move In
Classes start on Monday, August 25, 2008, and you'll want to be in your room before then.

Monday, August 18

  • Residence halls open for early move-in at 8 a.m.
  • Prior arrangements are not necessary.
  • Building desks are open 24 hours a day.
  • If you move in prior to August 23—which is the start of official contract occupancy—you'll be charged a small daily rate based upon your room type (from $10 to $35 per day, billed to your September U-Bill)

Saturday, August 23

  • Residence halls open for contract occupancy at 8 a.m.

Loading zones are available adjacent to buildings. Please unload your vehicle as quickly as possible, then move your car out of the loading area to make space for others. Residence hall building staff and student "CReW" members will be available Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 21-23, to help you move in. Public Safety and UI staff will be available to provide information on parking areas.

Only contract holders are allowed to check out a key to their room. Parents, moving companies, or other individuals or groups moving student belongings to campus will not be allowed to check out a key or access a room.

When Meals Begin
Although contract Residential Dining does not begin until Saturday, Aug. 23, you can eat at Burge or Hillcrest Market Places Monday through Friday, Aug. 18-22, by using Hawkeye Dollars, charging to your University account, or paying cash.

  • Burge Market Place will begin serving lunch and dinner on Monday, Aug. 18, and breakfast on Tuesday, Aug. 19.
  • Hillcrest Market Place will be open that week for lunch service only.
  • Breakfast is from 7-9 a.m.
  • Lunch is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Dinner is from 4:30 - 7 p.m.

Finding Your Resident Assistant (RA)
Resident assistants (RAs) are sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate students assigned to each floor in the residence halls. For entering students, their RA is often is the most important person in getting settled into campus and residence hall life. As soon as you get a chance, find your RA (usually by hall and then by floor) and introduce yourself.

Getting Around Campus
The University of Iowa campus is large, and depending on your area of study and course schedule, you might get to see quite a bit of it during your first few weeks. As big as it is, though, getting around is fairly easy to manage—either by foot or by Cambus, you can usually get where you need to go in short order.
