These three meal plans are referred to as Basic Fare 20/14/10. Choose from full board, 20 meals per week, any 14 meals per week, or any 10 meals per week. Residents in rooms with a University supplied kitchen may choose and alternative 5 meals per week plan.

Basic Fare Meal Plans Academic Year Semester
Full Board (20 meals/week) $2490.00 $1245.00
Any 14 meals per week $2395.00 $1197.50
Any 10 meals per week $2210.00 $1105.00

Alternative Meal Plan

This plan is available only to students living in rooms with a University supplied kitchen. It may also be purchased by students living off-campus, as well as staff and faculty.

Other Options
Meals may be eaten at Hillcrest Market Place or Burge Market Place throughout the academic year, anytime classes are in session.

The following options are available to residents to supplement their meal plan or in the case of returning students in rooms with a university kitchen in lieu of a Basic Fare Meal Plan. These dining options are also available to non-resident students, staff, and faculty.

20 Meal Deal - A block of 20 meals may be purchased for $140.00. Meals may be eaten at either Burge or Hillcrest Market Places anytime throughout the academic year when classes are in session. Twenty meals will be added to a special meal account, which is accessed simply by presenting the University ID card and telling the cashier you wish to use your 20-meal deal. The 20 Meal Deal may be purchased at the Contracts and Assignments Office, 17 Burge Hall. Meals must be used by the conclusion of the spring semester, May 15, 2009. No refunds are issued for unused meals.

Hawkeye Dollars - Hawkeye Dollars may be used at the washers, dryers and select vending machines in the residence halls, as well as Burge Market Place, Hillcrest Market Place, Art Building West, Pat's Diner, Law School Canteen, Dental Science Building Filling Station, Main Library, EMRB, MERF, Lindquist Center, and in the IMU (River Room Cafeteria, Java House, Union Station, Union Market, the Hawkeye Room). Hawkeye Dollars will expire upon termination of the cardholder's active affiliation with the University of Iowa as a current student, faculty, or staff member, or upon twelve (12) months of inactivity in the account, whichever comes first. The contract holder may apply for a refund of unused Hawkeye Dollars when their affiliation with the University of Iowa ends. Refunds will carry a $20 refund processing fee that will be deducted from the balance.

Cancelling Meal Plans

Only returning residents in rooms with a Univeristy supplied kitchen are permitted to cancel the board portion of their contract for either or both semesters. The cancellation deadlines are September 8, 2008 for the fall semester and January 30, 2009 for the spring semester.

Returning residents transferring to a room with a University supplied kitchen have five working days from the effective date of the transfer to change or cancel a board contract. After the five days, it is a binding contract for the remainder of the semester. Cancelling the board contract does not affect the balance in your Hawkeye Dollars account.

Students who cancel their residence hall contract will also have thier meal plan cancelled. All cancellations are subject to contract cancellation guidelines. Students who cancel their room contract may request a meal plan.

All changes, cancellations, or requests must be made in person at the Contracts and Assignments Office at 17 Burge Hall.

Changing Meal Plans

Changes must be made in writing during the first two weeks of each semester at the Contracts and Assignments Office, 17 Burge Hall. After September 8, 2008 no board changes can be made for fall semester. January 30, 2009 is the deadline for spring semester meal plan changes. Students transferring to a room with a University supplied kitchen have five working days from the effective date of the transfer to change a board contract. If moving from a room with a University supplied kitchen to a room without a kitchen, one of the Basic Fare (20/14/10) Meal Plans must be selected within five working days from the effective date of the transfer. If a meal plan is not chosen, a 10 meal plan will be assigned.

Changing the meal plan has no effect on the balance of the Hawkeye Dollar account.
